Our Ingredients
At Roots in Rice, we prioritize your wellbeing without compromising on flavor. Our Asian-inspired cake mixes are proudly gluten-free and crafted with a health-conscious approach. We've deliberately excluded artificial preservatives and flavors as well as synthetic dyes from our products, opting instead for natural ingredients and vegetable-derived colorings. This commitment to clean eating stems from Judy's personal journey with an autoimmune condition, which inspired her to develop delicious creations that support an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. Each mix delivers authentic Asian flavors yet thoughtfully formulated for those who are seeking cleaner, more mindful baking options.

Rice Flour
Rice is deeply ingrained in the Asian culture. Not only has it been a staple food for centuries, it is a symbol of prosperity and life. We selected rice flour for all our gluten free mixes because it gives our cakes a very smooth texture and has a neutral taste which allows the cake flavor to really shine. This is why you can’t even tell that it is gluten free.

Pure Red Radish
After learning about the harmful health concerns of synthetic food dyes, we made the conscious decision to only incorporate color from real foods into our baking mixes. Thus, for our strawberry cake, we use pure red radish juice to give the cakes its enhanced pink color, ensuring both visual appeal and natural ingredients because, as the saying goes, we eat with our eyes first.

Japanese Amaou Strawberry
During our first visit to Japan, we had the opportunity to taste the Amaou strawberry. We were so blown away by its gentle sweetness and strong strawberry aromatic taste that we couldn’t stop at eating just one. We then understood why the Amaou is the KING of Japanese strawberries.

Japanese Matcha
We set the bar quite high when choosing our Japanese matcha ingredient for our baking mixes and our final selection exceeded our expectations. Our matcha ingredient has a deep, vibrant green color with a bold, rich, earthy taste that emanates this smooth, velvety matcha flavor from the beginning, middle and end of every bite.

Organic Cane Sugar
Extracted from sugarcane, we use organic cane sugar because it is minimally processed so a healthier alternative to processed white sugar. Since the molasses has not been refined out, cane sugar has a darker color and richer taste. With Asian desserts known to be ‘not too sweet’, we prioritize the main ingredients to bring out the flavor vs excessive added sugar.

Organic Vanilla
Vanilla plays the critical role of flavor enhancer by balancing out the cake ingredients and adding depth to make them taste richer - improving the overall flavor profile. With such an important role, we meticulously selected fully, ripened, sun-cured Madagascar vanilla beans extracted slowly into powder form to maintain its true vanilla flavor.
